The disparity of mobile phone providers alongside the vast range of Smart phones, tablets and other mobile devices no longer allows businesses to limit themselves to one single model.

Imposing a single model on their users, personally used to  a wide range of features and functions, implies diversity...of risk

Besides the cost, this range – especially in operating systems (iOS, Blackberry, Windows, Android...) - makes it difficult, if not impossible to maintain any sort of company-wide central management.

Several recent trends, with their solutions, allow you to regain control of your company’s mobile devices for a small cost. BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) encourages employees to use their own devices for work.

This implies a certain controlled acceptance of the device by the company.

Indeed, Smart phones and tablets have access to company Wi-Fi with all the security features imaginable. And from this point we get to the need for security management…

Multiplatform central management now allows you total control of the whole spectrum of your company’s mobile devices. Whether personal or company devices, whether they are managed by the company or personal devices used for work, this central management uses solutions which allow referencing, GPS locating, wiping (in case of loss or theft), uploading (emails, files) in a secure environment.

It is within this framework that we invite you to discover the Sophos Mobile Control solution which this editor, a specialist in security, has released on to the market with a whole range of functions, many of which go way beyond traditional solutions.

Happy reading!

Sophos provides must have solutions for mobile device security.

With 15% of the security market and 150 million worldwide users, Sophos is in third place, just behind McAfee and Symantec. We met Sales Director, Guillaume Gamelin who talked to us about solutions for mobile devices.

OPTRIUM : Can you tell us about Sophos and its security strategy for mobile devices?

Guillaume Gamelin : Sophos has experienced huge growth (60% in three years, 22% in France) because of the completeness of its solution. Besides, Sophos is the only editor to provide companies with a security solution which covers all IT systems.

Increasingly, companies have to take account of the different ways their information is accessed. Users access confidential company information via laptop, tablet and Smartphone. It is therefore vital for companies to protect all mobile devices, both professional and personal, which connect to their network.

For the last two years, our MDM (Mobile Device Management) has meant that these new devices can be managed in terms of both estate and security.

OP : What are the features of Mobile Device Management?

GG : Sophos Mobile Control has features which include the management of mobile devices, mobile applications and data protection. The company has access to emails which it can filter if necessary and can configure Smart phones remotely. It can manage devices, whether they are iOS, Android or Blackberry, from a single console.

The company can intervene if a mobile is lost or stolen; it can perform a remote lock or wipe, locate a device or even do a compliance check.

Sophos Mobile Security comes as an add-on to allow total control of devices: it can block certain options, limit uploading to applications approved by the company, and secure passwords. The current market has seen an explosion in the sale of Android Smart phones (which now have a 47% market share); this represents a real risk in terms of security because they have an open and therefore very exposed OS. In reality, out of 500,000 Android applications, 200,000 are malware and use data on the device to send exorbitantly over-priced text messages. Sophos Mobile Security controls destructive apps, vital with Android today.

Another point to note is that a number of users store data in the cloud with Dropbox, Egnyte and others. It is impossible to secure data in the cloud. Sophos Mobile Encryption allows you to encrypt data with a key on your machine or on your Smartphone.

These solutions are available with no fixed costs via SaaS for small businesses or as software for medium or large accounts.

OP : What are the benefits of Sophos compared to other solutions on the market?

GG : The purchase of DIALOGS two years ago meant that we could perfect our knowledge of security through mobile device management. Sophos is the only company on the market who has this dual expertise.

We focus entirely on the professional market with features specifically adapted to their problems of security and just as importantly, a 24/7 technical support is included in all licences.
In the current climate, clients are looking for solutions which are easy to administer and which are not time consuming. These are two characteristics which they love about Sophos.

OS : An Operating System is a collection of programs which manages the use of computer hardware with software applications. It acts as an intermediary between software applications and the computer hardware capabilities – storage capacity of memory and hard drives and computing capacity of the processor. The Operating System accepts or rejects software demands and reserves required resources to ensure that their use does not interfere with applications from other software.
Malware : Malicious software is developed with the aim of destroying an IT system, without the consent of the infected user.
Mode SaaS : Software as a Service is a commercial software delivery model in which software and associated data are installed on remote servers rather than on the user’s machine.
BYOD : Bring Your Own Device is the concept of using a personal Smartphone/ tablet for business, approved according to company policy both for Operating System and content.
